    What is AVID Excel?

AVID Excel is a branch of the AVID system that specifically focuses on our English Learners to help accelerate academic language acquisition. The AVID Excel course is taken in middle school and targets critical reading skills as well as academic vocabulary development. Students in AVID Excel also participate in scholar groups with college tutors twice a week, similar to tutorials that take place in the AVID elective.

      What is AVID?

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a proven college-readiness system, part of the national AVID Center, that is designed to increase the number of students who enroll and persist in post-secondary education. Although AVID serves all students, it focuses on the least served students in the academic middle. The formula is simple: raise expectations of students and, with the AVID support system in place, they will rise to the challenge.

AVID is implemented in 4,800 schools in 48 states, the District of Columbia and 16 countries/territories. It serves more than 425,000 students. Schools and districts have taken AVID methodologies and strategies and implemented them school-wide and district-wide to impact their entire communities and create articulated programs for college success.

What differentiates AVID from other educational reform programs is its astounding success rate. Of the 2011 AVID Seniors reporting, 98.8% graduated and 91% intended to attend a post-secondary institution; 58% in four-year institutions and 33% in two-year institutions.

      The Mission of AVID

The mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students, and most especially the least served students who are in the middle:

      • will succeed in rigorous curriculum,
      • will complete a rigorous college preparatory path,
      • will enter mainstream activities of the school,
      • will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and
      • will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.

AVID’s systemic approach is designed to support students and educators as they increase school wide/district wide learning and performance.
