OCSA and Essentially Ellington logos on Puple backgroundJazz at Lincoln Center has announced that The Osceola County School for the Arts has once again been named as a finalist of the 2018 Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival for the second year in a row. As one of only 15 schools in the country to receive this prestigious distinction, the school’s Jazz Band A, under the direction of teacher Edwin Santiago, will perform live during the 23rd Annual Essentially Ellington Competition & Festival to be held on May 10-12, 2018, in New York City.
Essentially Ellington is a free program for high school jazz bands that aims to elevate musicianship, to broaden perspectives, and to inspire performance. The three-day festival will allow students, teachers, and musicians from across North America to participate in workshops, rehearsals, and performances, concluding with an evening concert and awards ceremony featuring the three top-placing bands. The show closes with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis performing music from the following year’s Essentially Ellington curriculum.
Individuals or businesses who would like to provide financial support to help The Osceola County School for the Arts’ jazz band students make the trip to New York are asked to contact Mark Conners, Assistant Principal, at Mark.Conners@osceolaschools.net or 407-931-4803.
