Frequently Asked Questions
-
What will a day look like for a student who chooses to return via digital learning this fall?
Students who will be starting the school year with digital learning will be expected to engage with their teacher and with their peers, using a computer, for the length of the school day. There will be time for breaks during transition from one content area or learning activity to another, as well as for recess and lunch. In addition, students will need to engage in a special area/block class each day, at the designated time in the schedule. Your child's teacher will communicate the daily schedule to you, prior to August 24, the first day of school. During breaks, recess, and lunch, we encourage students to be physically active and take a break from the computer screen.
-
Why is there not a blended option available?
As our school district strongly values parental choice, we are offering three options so that parents can make the best decision for their children and family. Our plan does not include a blended option or alternating day schedules for students, which prove hard to manage for working parents. In addition, many parents count on their school to provide a healthy breakfast and lunch for their children while in school.
-
What are the mask options for students with sensory or breathing issues? Would a face shield be accepted?
Yes, while masks will be mandatory and five washable cloth masks will be provided to each student by the district, children can wear any mask as long as it is not distracting (ex: no profanity, etc). Face shields will be allowed in addition to wearing a face mask. The district will work with its Deaf and Hard of Hearing students so that they can learn through lip reading and other accommodations. Schools and teachers will work with other ESE children who have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) regarding mask accommodations.
-
Will digital learning teachers provide help to ESOL students?
Absolutely! The goal is for the district to provide the necessary supports to ensure all learners experience a year and a half worth of growth from their personal starting point. Teachers and paraprofessionals will receive detailed guidance to meet the specific needs of English language learners and students receiving ESE services, and work with students individually and in small groups to provide the needed support. The TEAMS platform has a new message translation feature that lets users translate Teams messages into the language specified by their personal language settings, which will greatly aid students whose primary language is not English.
-
Will parents need to commit to a certain amount of time if they are choosing digital learning? What will it look like if a 3rd grade classroom begins with 20 students virtually and after 2-3 months only has 3 students doing virtual? What will that mean for the face-to-face classes? Will this put them over 18 students?
Flexibility will be key to the district’s success as we move through the new conditions we find ourselves in. Parents will need to give their school at least a week’s notice if they want their child to transition from digital learning to face-to-face learning. The district will adhere to the state’s class-size mandate for both its in-person classes allowing for social distancing and its digital classrooms.
-
Will students still be sharing books like they did last year for classes?
Classrooms will limit the sharing of textbooks and books as much as possible and as supplies allow.
-
How do you request to transition back to face-to-face instruction if you begin with digital learning?
Parents will need to communicate to their school’s administration starting the week of September 8 if they wish to select a different option for their child. It will require a week’s notice to make the change.
-
Will teachers be live streaming classes or add videos for teaching and instruction?
Yes, teaching and instruction as part of digital learning will be more structured than what took place at the end of last school year. Students will log on at specific times for live lessons and also be able to view recorded lessons by teachers.
-
How will middle school ESE students do distance learning as far as help from their teachers?
The district will continue to provide all the supports and accommodations outlined in students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and their 504 Plans. Teachers and paraprofessionals will have the ability to provide help and support for students individually or in small groups.
-
Is state testing still required for digital learning students?
State assessment requirements will be the same no matter which back-to-school option parents select. As it stands currently, students will have to take the assessments in person and we will make arrangements at that time for in-person testing.
-
How are the school supplies going work? Will students have their own individual supplies or will they be sharing them in groups?
Students will utilize their own school supplies and not share them with their classmates.
-
If I chose face-to-face but my kids are unhappy and we switch to digital learning, will we need to provide our own device?
For digital learning (Option 2) students, the district will provide a laptop and hot spot if they are needed. Students who enroll in Osceola Virtual School (Option 3) should have their own laptop and access to strong WiFi.
-
Why isn't digital learning available for VPK students?
State guidelines do not allow for a digital learning option for VPK students.
-
At what point, either based on the highest-in-the-country number of cases, or the positivity rate of testing within the state, will the school board reconsider its plan to reopen schools?
The Florida Commissioner of Education’s Executive Order 2020-EO-06 states that upon reopening in August, all school boards must open brick and mortar schools at least five days per week for all students, subject to advice and orders of the Florida Department of Health, local departments of health, Executive Order 20-149 and subsequent executive orders.
-
For the face-to-face option, it says if the child travels internationally or on a cruise they would have to quarantine for 14 days. In this situation will these quarantine days go against attendance or will they be shifted to digital learning for those two weeks?
Any student who needs to quarantine will be transitioned into the digital platform so that learning can continue. Principals will work with students and parents on their individual situations. Parents are asked to request a prearranged absence for the trip so that plans can be made for when they are out of school.
-
How are you going to ensure that schools are clean? Especially the bathrooms.
The district has a comprehensive cleaning and sanitizing plan in plan for our custodial teams across the district. You can find it here.

-
What is the commitment timeframe from the county on Option 2? For example, will it be an option for the entire school year, one semester, etc.?
There is no set timeframe for Option 2. Students will be able to transition from digital learning to face-to-face instruction when parents feel comfortable as conditions with the pandemic improve or a vaccine is developed. We cannot guarantee a seat in the same classes or with the same teacher when a student wishes to return on campus, and it will require a week’s notice to make the change.
-
If my child is out sick (not due to COVID-19) will they be allowed to return under the normal protocol?

The Department of Health will advise the district if there is a need at any point for a school closure.
-
What if a parent tests positive and the children test negative? Do the children quarantine along with the parents? What if they catch it later on, will there be a quarantine absence limit?
In this case, the district would work with the Department of Health for contact tracing and the student would either need to provide a doctor’s note stating he or she has had a negative COVID-19 test or the student would need to quarantine for 14 days. The student could move to digital learning throughout the quarantine time so that learning can continue.
-
Will the classes be randomized or will the classes be lumped together by location/neighborhood in order to limit spread?
Master schedules will not be built for students based on location/neighborhoods.

-
Have you considered that your current plan will further the divide between the haves and have nots?
The district believes that the best learning environment for all students is face-to-face with a teacher. We also realize that providing parents with options allows for parents to choose what education should look like for their child during these uncertain times. The district remains committed to ensuring access and equity to high-quality instruction for all students. Mobile devices and hotspots will be available for student check-out if there is a need to ensure learning can continue for all students without interruption. In addition, digital teachers and face-to-face teachers will plan and work together on the delivery of the grade-level, viable curriculum.

What are the plans for students who cannot do digital learning but are immune compromised, have autism, or need paper packets?
Our ESE Department is working with individual schools to determine how to best meet each student's needs. Unfortunately, the paper packets limit the ability of the teacher to adapt lessons, instructional techniques, and tasks to ensure students are able to achieve mastery of the standards. Please contact your child's school for further assistance.
