THE NEOC PASSION PROJECT
NeoCity Academy students will complete a senior capstone project, which we call the Passion Project. The process of completing the Passion Project begins in Year 3, with AP Seminar, and continues in Year 4 with AP Research.
NeoCity Students who pass the exams in both AP Seminar and AP Research - and pass 4 additional AP exams are eligible for the AP Capstone Diploma designation.
Our mission is to develop students who believe the world can be a better place and that they can be the ones to make it happen.
To this end - students will complete their senior capstone - the Passion Project. This is actually a two year process, and will culminate with a student's defense of their ideas. Our students Passion Projects need to meet one of three criteria: change the community you live in, change someone's life, or change the world.
WHERE DOES AP CAPSTONE COME IN?
The Passion Project is a multi-year project our students complete. We want to ensure that they have all of the supports that they need along the way. This is where the AP Capstone Diploma Program comes in.
Our students take two courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. These courses guide students through the steps and provide the supports for students to stand, deliver and defend their Passion Project.
In this course, students will learn to consider an issue from multiple perspectives, identify credible sources, evaluate strengths and weaknesses of arguments, and make logical, evidence-based recommendations. Students will investigate a variety of topics through various viewpoints of their choosing.
During the course, students complete a team project and an individual paper and presentation, as well as take a written end-of-course exam. These components contribute to the overall AP Seminar score.
AP Seminar is a prerequisite for AP Research.
In AP Research, students explore various research methods and complete an independent research project. The student's project can build on a topic, problem, or issue you covered in AP Seminar.
At the end of the project, students submit their academic paper and present and defend their research findings. These components contribute to the overall AP Research score. There is no end-of-course exam.
