Sports often brings out the best in students. That statement applies to Tohopekaliga High School student Alex Negron.

"I used to be super shy, and sports helped me come out of my shell," said Alex.

Swimming is where his heart is.

"I got into swimming when I was at KSA middle school. When I came to Toho and realized there was a swim team, I wanted to join."

He often swam the 50-meter free and the 100-meter backstroke. However, Alex wasn't afraid to try new things whether that be swimming events outside his comfort zone or learning a whole new sport.

"Last year was my first year playing lax, it was after swim season. I was looking for something else to do; my buddy Jorge was trying to play a sport with me and lax was brand new."

Sports were a way for Alex to escape the challenges of high school.

"I’m not going to lie, it’s really hard to keep everything on track with two sports and AP classes, but as long as you put time aside you can find a way."

Alex never lost sight of how important his education is. He graduated as one of the Top 20 students in his class and was named the Osceola County School District Male Academic Athlete of the Year.

"I didn’t expect to win that. I’m pretty proud of myself. I also can’t forget to thank my family for everything they’ve done for me. You guys have supported me at every game, you guys are always behind me. I love you guys!"

Alex plans to continue his education at UCF.
