Tiffany Perry Named Osceola School District’s Teacher of the Year

Ms. Tiffany Perry, Fifth Grade Teacher at East Lake Elementary, has been named as Osceola County’s 2024 Teacher of the Year. She stands out among other amazing educators because of her ability to connect with learners in remarkable ways. She has made it her mission to get to know her students well and to communicate with them on a deeper level in a safe environment, where they are encouraged to be authentic and show their uniqueness.
“Every day, I feel energized by my students’ curiosity, and I am inspired by the risks they’re willing to take to grow as humans,” said Perry. “My biggest realization has been that it is not my job to have all the answers, but to get out of my students’ way. They are capable of so many things and have such unique perspectives. If I can show them how to be flexible and how to find resources, they will leave my classroom with so much more than memorized facts. It is my responsibility to give them chances to feel successful and to help them understand that they don’t have to change who they are to make that happen.”
As her preference in the classroom is for students to talk more than she does, Ms. Perry has successfully implemented Socratic Seminars to improve writing, thereby having students ask and answer questions together using critical thinking and examining different points of view. She has implemented Hour of Code and learned how to tie coding to problem-solving strategies. She has also taught her students more about the engineering design process by working with them to code robots to follow a path. She is currently applying for East Lake Elementary to become the first Everglades Champion School in the Osceola School District so students can learn about Florida’s ecosystem, which provides the daily water supply for 9 million residents, contributes billions of dollars to Florida’s economy, and provides recreational and educational opportunities for millions of visitors from all over the world.
“My students come to me with already shaped puzzle pieces, but they don’t always know how those pieces fit together,” said Perry. “I see it as my responsibility to show them that learning is not about changing who you are and reshaping your puzzle pieces, but rather seeing the bigger picture and the possibilities of where those pieces could fit. It is my job to empower them to fully embrace who they are and connect that to what we do in the classroom.”
While focusing on students, she also serves as her school’s grade-level chairman, models lessons for other teachers, trains teachers on various strategies and tools, and presents her team’s approach to interventions for students to the entire staff. At the district level, she has been able to share her knowledge and support with new educators.
“Ms. Perry provides students opportunities to figure out who they are as learners and as people,” said Osceola School District Superintendent Dr. Debra Pace. “They may not remember every lesson she teaches, but they know without a doubt that they can be successful in school, and that she will always be there to cheer them on.”
In honor of her success and passion, Ms. Perry will now represent Osceola County at the state level in the Florida Department of Education’s 2024 Teacher of the Year judging.

La Sra. Tiffany Perry, maestra de quinto grado en East Lake Elementary, ha sido nombrada Maestra del Año 2024 del condado Osceola. Ella se destaca entre otros educadores increíbles debido a su capacidad para conectar con los estudiantes de manera notable. Su misión es conocer bien a sus estudiantes y comunicarse con ellos a un nivel más profundo en un ambiente seguro, donde se les anima a ser auténticos y mostrar su singularidad.
"La curiosidad de mis estudiantes me llena de energía cada día y me inspiran los riesgos que están dispuestos a asumir para crecer como seres humanos", expresó Perry. "Me he dado cuenta de que mi trabajo no consiste en tener todas las respuestas, sino en apartarme del camino de mis alumnos. Son capaces de tantas cosas y tienen perspectivas tan únicas. Si puedo enseñarles a ser flexibles y a encontrar recursos, saldrán de mi clase con mucho más que datos memorizados. Es mi responsabilidad darles oportunidades de sentirse exitosos y ayudarles a entender que no tienen que cambiar lo que son para conseguirlo".
Como en clase prefiere que los alumnos hablen más que ella, la Sra. Perry ha puesto en práctica con éxito los seminarios socráticos para mejorar la escritura, haciendo que los alumnos formulen y respondan preguntas juntos utilizando el pensamiento crítico y examinando diferentes puntos de vista. Ha puesto en práctica la Hora de Codificar y ha aprendido a vincular la codificación a las estrategias de resolución de problemas. También ha enseñado a sus estudiantes más sobre el proceso de diseño de ingeniería trabajando con ellos para codificar robots para que sigan un camino. Actualmente está solicitando que East Lake Elementary se convierta en la primera Escuela Campeona de los Everglades en el Distrito Escolar de Osceola para que los estudiantes puedan aprender sobre el ecosistema de Florida, que proporciona el suministro diario de agua para 9 millones de residentes, contribuye con miles de millones de dólares a la economía de Florida y ofrece oportunidades recreativas y educativas para millones de visitantes de todo el mundo.
"Mis alumnos vienen a mí con piezas de rompecabezas ya formadas, pero no siempre saben cómo encajarlas", expresó Perry. "Considero que es mi responsabilidad mostrarles que el aprendizaje no consiste en cambiar quién eres y remodelar las piezas de tu rompecabezas, sino en ver el panorama general y las posibilidades de encaje de esas piezas. Mi trabajo consiste en capacitarles para que acepten plenamente quiénes son y conecten eso con lo que hacemos en el salón de clases."
A la vez que se centra en los alumnos, también ejerce la presidencia de grado de su escuela, modela lecciones para otros maestros, entrena a los maestros en diversas estrategias y herramientas y presenta a todo el personal el enfoque de su equipo sobre las intervenciones para los alumnos. A nivel de distrito, ha podido compartir sus conocimientos y su apoyo con nuevos educadores.
"La Sra. Perry brinda a los estudiantes oportunidades para descubrir quiénes son como estudiantes y como personas", expresó la Dra. Debra Pace, superintendente del Distrito Escolar de Osceola. "Puede que no recuerden todas las lecciones que ella enseña, pero saben sin lugar a duda que pueden tener éxito en la escuela y que ella siempre estará ahí para animarlos".
En honor a su éxito y pasión, la Sra. Perry representará ahora al condado Osceola a nivel estatal en el concurso de Maestro del Año 2024 del Departamento de Educación de Florida.
