Principal's Message

  • Welcome to Gateway High School. Home of the Panthers!

My name is James Long, and I’m proud to be your principal.

As a member of Panther Nation, you will be a part of an inclusive learning environment that offers a variety of educational programs designed to fit the needs of every student. Gateway’s dynamic and diverse population fosters a positive and supportive culture that helps students reach their academic, athletic, and artistic potential. Our strong history of academic success is built on the belief that all students can be successful.

Whether you’re focused on attending a Top 100 university, joining the military, earning a technical degree or exploring other career-related options, Gateway has something for everyone.

If college is your focus, Gateway has four outstanding options to help you realize your dreams.

    The International Baccalaureate Programme

    Advanced Placement

    Dual Enrollment

Advancement Via Individual Determination or (AVID)

Our International Baccalaureate Programme is one of the most highly regarded college prep programs in the world. Earning an IB Diploma guarantees that you will receive a Bright Futures scholarship from the state of Florida. It also gives you a competitive edge when it comes time to apply for college. In general, IB students are accepted into college at a higher rate than their peers. Many of Gateway’s IB graduates have attended prestigious universities such as Harvard, Yale, and Brown to name just a few.

If the IB Programme doesn’t sound like a good fit for you, never fear. You can still enjoy the benefits of college-level instruction by taking one of our 16 different Advanced Placement Classes.

Many of Gateway’s AP Students also apply to our Dual Enrollment program and take classes at Valencia College or Osceola Technical College (oTECH).

The Dual Enrollment program is the fastest growing program in Panther Nation.

This school year, Gateway had 15 students earn their associate’s degree through Valencia: 4 more than the Class of 2019.

In total, 88 students took 543 classes at Valencia. Twenty-five more students pursued a Career Certificate at oTECH.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is another program that has been growing rapidly at Gateway. It is another highly successful college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year college. It has a proven track record in bring out the best in students and in closing the achievement gap.

Though we place a high priority on college-level coursework, we also understand that students have other interests and passions that they want to explore.

If that sounds like you, we have just what you’re looking for.

Gateway has award-winning visual arts, chorus, band and drama programs.

If it’s athletics or extracurriculars you’re after, Gateway has a plethora of options. Don’t see what you want? No problem. Every year intrepid students take the initiative and start their own clubs. You can too.

Finally, we strive to be a school community that honors the pride, commitment and dedication of our students, staff and families.

Nowhere are these values more on display than in our nationally recognized Marine Corps JROTC program.

Each school year, almost 300 students join the ranks of our JROTC program. Our three full-time instructors help students learn about discipline, teamwork, honesty, and integrity. Our cadets have won multiple awards at the local, state and national level.

As you can see, Gateway has a lot to offer. Every staff member at Gateway High School is dedicated to you and your future. We are constantly examining our courses and our scheduling to make sure that we can meet the needs of our community. We are prepared for the present, but focused on the future.

    Cheers,
    Mr. James Long, Principal
