What is Bright Futures?

  • The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program establishes lottery-funded scholarships to reward Florida high school graduates for high academic achievement.

    • Florida Academic Scholarship (FAS): Pays 100% of a student's tuition and fees at an eligible in-state, public university such as the University of Florida, Florida State University, and the University of Central Florida.   
    • Florida Medallion Scholarship (FMS): Pays 75% of a student's tuition and fees at an eligible in-state, public university such as the University of Florida, Florida State University, and the University of Central Florida.

  • *The GPA and ACT/SAT test score requirements are waived for students who earn their IB Diploma. 

    Additional Requirements

    • Be a Florida resident and a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen, as determined by the student's postsecondary institution.
    • Complete the FFAA no later than August 31 after high school graduation.
    • Earn a standard Florida high school diploma, or its equivalent, from a Florida public high school or a registered Florida Department of Education (FDOE) private high school; or complete a home education program.
    • Not have been found guilty of, or pled nolo contendere to, a felony charge, unless the student has been granted clemency by the Governor and Cabinet sitting as the Executive Office of Clemency.
    • Be accepted by, and enroll in a degree or certificate program at, an eligible Florida public or independent postsecondary institution.
    • Be enrolled for at least six non-remedial semester credit hours (or the equivalent in quarter or clock hours) per term.
    • If not funded in the academic year immediately following high school graduation, apply within five years of high school graduation to have your award reinstated. (Please refer to ‘Reinstatement Requirements’ section of Chapter 3 for more information regarding the reinstatement process.) (Please refer to the ‘Deferment of the Scholarship’ section at the end of this chapter concerning students who enlist in the military or engage in a full-time religious or service obligation after graduation.)

How do You Document Hours?

  • The following steps must be completed for each community service experience:

    1. Complete “School District of Osceola County Bright Futures Service Planning Sheet” including student signature, parent signature, and school official signature.
    2. Document service hours using appropriate method
      1. GWHS Service Hours Log (for volunteer experiences with a Gateway organization)
      2. Letterhead (for all students who complete a service experience outside of school)
        1. Letters must be written on the organization’s letterhead and include the following information:
          1. Student’s first and last name
          2. Name of organization
          3. Number of hours the student earned
          4. Activity(s) the student participated in during their service
          5. Name of supervisor
          6. Supervisor’s contact information
          7. Supervisor’s signature
    3. Submit service hours documentation to the IB Counselor (Ms. Still-- Alaina.Still@osceolaschools.net)
    4. The Data Entry Clerk will enter hours into Focus upon receipt.
    5. Complete Bright Futures Application during the Fall of your Senior Year.
