Program Description
The General Educational Development (GED®) program provides instruction in science, social studies, language arts, and mathematics. The GED® computer-based test is administered for $152.00.
Average Program Length
The length of the program depends on the functioning level of the students skills determined by the placement test and the student’s motivation. Therefore, the length of each of the above programs varies with each student. A computerized learning center for drill and practice, and individual tutoring can be provided to assist students’ progress.
Admissions
ALCO's high school/secondary Diploma classes are offered at the Main and Poinciana campuses. These classes are taught in English only. If your English speaking skills are not Advanced, we offer English classes at (8) locations (see English Courses). Applicants seeking enrollment into one of ALCO's programs must take a placement test and pay for registration/tuition. For more information, please see the School Registration page.
Registration, Payment, Testing
- APPLY: Complete the registration form by clicking on Apply Now on the top right.
- PAY: Make the Fall semester online payment fee of $70.00 ($30.00 tuition, $25.00 test, $15.00 registration). We accept Cash, Visa, or MasterCard only.
- MAKE: Make the appointment to take the placement test.
- TEST*: Bring your photo ID to take the 3-hour, in-person GOALS (Greater Opportunities for Adult Learning Success) test.
- START: Begin class at your selected class location and time.
*Whether you select face-to-face GED® classes or GED® Virtual Hybrid classes, the GOALS placement test must be taken in person at our Main or Poinciana locations.
*GOALS placement test scores expire after one (1) year.

Insurance
ALCO does not carry student accident insurance. Students are advised to carry their own insurance.
ABE/GED® Virtual Hybrid
The ABE/GED® Virtual Hybrid class combines both face-to-face and online Edgenuity E-Learning instruction. Participants can work on the class(es) at home and on campus. Participants must attend an on-campus, face-to-face orientation to learn to navigate Edgenuity, create a ged.com account, understand course expectations, and request necessary vouchers for the GED® Ready practice tests. To be successful in this virtual hybrid class, participants should spend at least 10 hours per week in Edgenuity.
To enroll in a ABE/GED® Virtual Hybrid class, you must meet at least (1) one of the following criteria:
- Reading GOALS pre-test score of 228 or higher OR
- Math GOALS 2 pre-test score of 214 or higher OR
- Have passed at least (1) one GED test subject
If test score is below the required level, you can register for face-to-face classes at the Main or Poinciana campuses. If you are interested in the ABE/GED® Virtual Hybrid class, you may qualify to take the GOALS post-test after 70 hours of face-to-face instruction. If your new score meets the requirement, you can transfer to the ABE/GED® Virtual Hybrid class.
Refunds
NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS WHO VOLUNTARILY WITHDRAW FROM THE CLASS IN WHICH THEY HAVE ENROLLED. You will be notified only if the class you want is full or cancelled due to insufficient enrollment.
Requirements/Qualification for High School Diploma (GED®) Courses

To take the GED®, Florida requires that you be at least 18 years old.
You must never have completed high school and not be currently enrolled in high school.
If you are underage, you need approval from your school district. If you are 16 or 17 and want to take the GED®, Florida has an Underage Waiver Form that must be completed by the Florida school district where you live. To be eligible, you have to meet the conditions set by your school district.
