Celebrating Arts in Our Schools Month

March is Arts in Our Schools Month—a time to celebrate the profound impact of art education on students’ academic and personal growth here in Osceola County. Why are the arts so important in schools, you might ask? Research shows that the arts promote critical thinking, collaboration, and creative problem solving. The arts allow us to tap into and learn from other people’s stories, building empathy and understanding along the way. The School District of Osceola County is committed to offering students’ a well-rounded arts-education. 

At the elementary level, all schools offer music and visual arts programs, with some also featuring dance, orchestra, and theatre. Our students showcase their talents in the community and have garnered national recognition for their performance and visual art achievements. Our students also get to experience world-class performances from the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, Orlando Opera, Central Florida Ballet, and Orlando Family Stage. 

Our secondary schools offer a rich array of arts programs, including band, creative writing, chorus, dance, orchestra, theatre, and visual arts. Our students participate (and WIN) national music competitions, regional and state thespian festivals, and visual art contests at the local, state, and national levels. Students have represented the county around the country, performing at Pearl Harbour, Essentially Ellington, and the Fourth of July Parade in Washington D.C., to name a few.

SDOC arts graduates have attended prestigious university programs like Juilliard, Berklee College of Music, and Savannah College of Art and Design. Our students have been on Broadway, have performed in concert halls around the world, have published books, and have been featured in shows on Netflix and Hulu. Some have built lucrative careers at Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando. Others have used what they learned from the arts to become lawmakers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, and architects. There’s no denying how powerful the arts are in our students’ K-12 education! 

Our county is also one of the first in the state to host an all-county theatre production! Following the success of School of Rock: the Musical in August 2023, preparations are underway for this summer’s upcoming production of Annie! Virtual auditions are due May 13^th and can be accessed at http://tinyurl.com/ACTannieauditions.

The commitment to arts education extends beyond the school year through initiatives like the stART Summer Arts Intensive. This immersive, two-week program offers students in grades 6-12 the opportunity to refine their skills in creative writing, dance, music, theatre, or visual arts, guided by district teachers and visiting artist. Accepted students attend free of charge! The program will take place June 10-21 at the Osceola County School for the Arts. Auditions are due March 22 at www.startosceola.org.

The arts are alive and well in Osceola County. Our school district is so proud of the thousands—yes, thousands!—of talented, hard-working fine and performing arts students and their dedicated teachers, many of whom are professional artists around the community. As our school district and community continues to grow, so do our dreams and plans for Arts in Our Schools! 

Celebrando el Mes de las Artes en Nuestras Escuelas

Marzo es el Mes de las Artes en Nuestras Escuelas-un tiempo para celebrar el profundo impacto de la educación artística en el crecimiento académico y personal de los estudiantes aquí en el condado Osceola. ¿Por qué son tan importantes las artes en las escuelas?, se preguntará. Las investigaciones demuestran que las artes fomentan el pensamiento crítico, la colaboración y la resolución creativa de problemas. Las artes nos permiten aprovechar y aprender de las historias de otras personas, generando empatía y comprensión a lo largo del camino. El Distrito Escolar del Condado Osceola está comprometido a ofrecer a los estudiantes una educación artística completa.

En el nivel elemental, todas las escuelas ofrecen programas de música y artes visuales y algunas también incluyen baile, orquesta y teatro. Nuestros estudiantes muestran sus talentos en la comunidad y han obtenido reconocimiento nacional por su desempeño y logros en artes visuales. Nuestros estudiantes también pueden experimentar actuaciones de clase mundial de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Orlando, la Ópera de Orlando, el Ballet de Florida Central y el Orlando Family Stage.

El compromiso con la educación artística se extiende más allá del año escolar a través de iniciativas como el Intensivo de Artes de Verano stART. Este programa inmersivo de dos semanas ofrece a los estudiantes de los grados 6 a 12 la oportunidad de perfeccionar sus habilidades en escritura creativa, baile, música, teatro o artes visuales, guiados por maestros del distrito y artistas visitantes. ¡Los estudiantes aceptados asisten gratis! El programa se llevará a cabo del 10 al 21 de junio en la Escuela de Artes del Condado Osceola. La fecha límite para las audiciones es el 22 de marzo en www.startosceola.org. 

Las artes están vivas y bien en el condado Osceola. Nuestro distrito escolar está muy orgulloso de los miles -sí, miles- de talentosos y trabajadores estudiantes de bellas artes y artes escénicas y de sus dedicados maestros, muchos de los cuales son artistas profesionales en toda la comunidad.
