Shanoff Shadows – Transportation

After shadowing members of our School Nutrition Services and Maintenance teams, Dr. Shanoff boarded a big yellow bus one Friday afternoon to shadow Nardelly Guarini, a bus driver in our Transportation department. Starting at Gateway High, they completed routes from Partin Settlement Elementary and Denn John Middle, covering over 65 miles! 

Ms. Guarini has not missed a day of work in five years. Dr. Shanoff asked her why she had not missed a day in so long, and she said it was because someone told her that certain students would not come to school if she were not driving the bus. “Think about that for a minute,” says Dr. Shanoff. “Students literally wouldn’t get on the bus because she wasn’t the one greeting them first thing in the morning. Not sure how much more power one person can have than that.”

Dr. Shanoff’s afternoon went smoothly on his route, with the kids and Nardelly greeting each other as they got on the bus. It was clear to Dr. Shanoff that Nardelly’s top priority was safety. Operating a school bus always requires 100% concentration. Ms. Guarini needs to be aware of what is happening inside the bus and outside, including traffic, weather conditions, and other vehicles on the road. She might need to adjust her speed if it is raining outside or remain patient in heavy traffic, ensuring she gets the students home safely and on time.

“The power of Nardelly’s position is that tens of thousands of students receive their first hello and last goodbye each day from their bus operator. For some students, that may be the interaction that gets their day started positively and may also be why they return to school the next day,” Dr. Shanoff notes.

He adds, “Let’s continue to honor our support positions. Even though Nardelly doesn’t teach, her interaction with students and the safe transport of each student complements our teachers’ success. And for students that thrive on, and require, a Day One mentality, our transportation team provides that personalized touch and reset button every day for students!”

Después de la observación laboral realizada a miembros de nuestros equipos de Servicios de Nutrición y Mantenimiento Escolar, el Dr. Shanoff subió a un gran autobús amarillo un viernes por la tarde para observar la labor de Nardelly Guarini, conductora de autobús de nuestro departamento de Transporte. Comenzando en Gateway High, completaron rutas desde Partin Settlement Elementary y Denn John Middle, ¡cubriendo más de 65 millas!

La Sra. Guarini no ha faltado ni un solo día al trabajo en cinco años. El Dr. Shanoff le preguntó por qué llevaba tanto tiempo sin faltar, y ella respondió que porque alguien le había dicho que ciertos estudiantes no irían a la escuela si ella no conducía el autobús. "Piense en eso por un minuto", expresó el Dr. Shanoff. "Los estudiantes literalmente no subirían al autobús porque ella no era quien les recibía a primera hora de la mañana. No sé cuánto más poder puede tener una persona".

La tarde del Dr. Shanoff transcurrió sin problemas en su ruta, los niños y Nardelly se saludaron al subir al autobús. El Dr. Shanoff tenía claro que la máxima prioridad de Nardelly era la seguridad. Conducir un autobús escolar requiere siempre un 100% de concentración. La Sra. Guarini tiene que ser consciente de lo que ocurre dentro y fuera del autobús, incluidos el tráfico, las condiciones meteorológicas y otros vehículos en la carretera. Puede que tenga que ajustar la velocidad si está lloviendo o mantener la paciencia cuando hay mucho tráfico, para asegurarse de que los estudiantes llegan a casa sanos y salvos y a tiempo.

"El poder de la posición de Nardelly radica en que decenas de miles de estudiantes reciben cada día su primer saludo y su último adiós de su conductor de autobús. Para algunos estudiantes, esa puede ser la interacción que les haga empezar el día de forma positiva y también puede ser el motivo por el que vuelvan a la escuela al día siguiente", señaló el Dr. Shanoff.

Y añade: "Sigamos honrando nuestros puestos de apoyo". Aunque Nardelly no enseñe, su interacción con los estudiantes y el transporte seguro de cada uno de ellos complementa el éxito de nuestros maestros. “¡Y para los estudiantes que prosperan y requieren una mentalidad de primer día, nuestro equipo de transporte proporciona ese toque personalizado y botón de reinicio todos los días para los estudiantes!"
