Food Additives

Food additives are substances added to food to enhance its flavor, appearance, texture, shelf life, or nutritional value. They can be natural or synthetic and are commonly used in processed foods.

Potassium Bromate Added to flour used in packaged baked goods, possible carcinogen.Used to be in wonder bread and White Castle.

 

Propylparaben Preservative in pastries and some tortillas. It causes developmental and reproductive harm.

  • Weight Watchers Cakes- red velvet crème cake and lemon crème cake

 

BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) Preservative in cured meat and other foods, possible human carcinogen.

  • Sausages: Including certain hot dogs and bratwurst.​
  • Bacon: Both traditional and pre-cooked varieties.​
  • Ham: Especially pre-packaged or sliced ham.​
  • Luncheon Meats: Such as bologna and salami.​
  • Smoked Fish: Including smoked salmon and mackerel.

 

BHT Butylated hydroxytoluene (also called BHT) Preservative found in cereals and other foods,  possible human carcinogen.

  • Honey Bunches of Oats: Varieties such as Honey Roasted, With Almonds, and With Real Strawberries.

Titanium dioxide is a color additive used mostly in candy. It may damage DNA.

Synthetic food dye found in food and beverages. It can affect development and cause behavioral difficulties in children. Most concerning: Red 3, Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Blue 2 and Green 3.

  • Froot Loops: Contains Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and Blue 1
  • Apple Jacks: Contains Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and Blue 1. ​
  • Cap'n Crunch: Contains Yellow 5 and Yellow 6. ​
  • Fruity Cheerios: Blue 1.

 

Aspartame artificial sweetener that can affect the hormones that regulate metabolism and have a negative effect on weight control. It has also been linked to heart disease and the increased risk of cancer.

  • Diet Soft Drinks: Products like Diet Coke, Pepsi Zero, and Sprite Zero
  • Sugar-Free Chewing Gum: Brands such as Wrigley's Extra and Orbit
  • Sugar-Free or Diet Desserts: Items like Jell-O Sugar-Free Gelatin
  • Sugar-Free Beverages: Powdered drink mixes, such as Crystal Light
  • Sugar-Free Candies and Mints: Items like sugar-free chocolates, breath mints, and hard candies
  • Tabletop Sweeteners: Products like Equal and NutraSweet

 

Azodicarbonamide, or ADA is used as a dough conditioner and strengthener, as well as a bleaching agent in breads and pastries. Increased risk of cancer may also cause liver and kidney injury and affect the blood, the nervous and respiratory systems. Seems to have been removed or switched to another type of ingredient. Also used in making yoga mats.

  • It used to be in McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s and Subway breads.

 

Propyl gallate is a preservative used in vegetable oil, meat products and chewing gum, among other products. hormone disruption and has been linked to an increased risk of asthma, hyperactivity and even cancer.

Are They Safe?

Most food additives are regulated by food safety authorities like the FDA (U.S.) or EFSA (Europe). However, some additives have raised health concerns, especially when consumed in large amounts or by sensitive individuals.
