Interviewing

An interview can get you the job of your dreams as quickly as it can put you on the "do not hire" list. Check out the tips below to help you prepare for your interview experience!

Before the Interview

  • In-person?
    • Figure out your route to get to your interview
    • Figure out how much time it will take to use that route during the time of day you are interviewing.
      • Give yourself more time than you think to commute to your interview location to account for unexpected traffic
  • Virtual?
    • Test your internet, camera, microphone, and audio ahead of time
    • Make sure you have a quiet, uninterrupted space for your interview
    • Blur your background or have a professional background
  • Whether it’s in-person or virtual:
    • Ask your College & Career Counselor for a mock interview
    • Review the job description. Think of how your previous experiences relate to each job responsibility
    • Think of a few good questions you can ask your interviewer that will help you decide if the workplace is a good fit for you and your availability
    • Dress professionally
    • Use proper posture and manners – sit up straight, strong, confident handshake (if in-person)
    • Have a copy of your resume and cover letter ready
    • Plan to arrive/log in 10 minutes before your scheduled interview time

During the Interview

  • Treat all staff with respect
  • Greet your interviewer with a smile and firm handshake
  • Make sure you answer the questions your are being asked completely
    • A little bit of silence while you prepare your answer is okay! It’s also okay to ask an interviewer to repeat a question.
  • Ask about the hiring timeline
  • Thank the interviewer for their time, even if it's not a good experience or good fit

After the Interview

  • Send a follow-up email thanking interviewer for their time (especially if you are interested in the job)
  • If you get the job - ask when your start date will be and what you will be expected to wear
  • If you do not get the job - ask for feedback on your interview. Feedback can help you perform better on your next interview!
