College Admission Testing

There are 3 college admission tests utilized for 4-year college admission in the United States – the CLT, SAT, and ACT. Learn more about these tests below!

Please note, the student is responsible for creating and accessing their SAT, ACT, and CLT accounts. The school district does not have the ability to create these accounts, reset passwords, or modify accounts on behalf of the students.

Tips for account creation:

  • Students need to use their full, legal name when creating their accounts and keep their contact information updated
  • Students are encouraged to use a personal, professional email, not their school email when creating their accounts.
  • Students should never create duplicate accounts

Find out more about the test scores colleges look for under the Building your College List section of the 4-Year College section of the SDOC College & Career website. Learn more about the test scores required for Bright Futures on the Bright Futures section of the SDOC College & Career website.

Which test should I take?

Different colleges and scholarships have different requirements and preferred tests. Check with the colleges and/or scholarships you plan to apply to see which test score they require.

Score Reporting

High schools cannot send college admission test scores on a student’s behalf. Students must request to have their scores sent to colleges upon test registration, on test day, or directly from their College Board, ACT, or CLT portals. Waiting until after test day to have scores sent can accrue additional costs. Please note, it can take colleges/universities 4 to 6 weeks to process test scores after you’ve requested to have them sent.

SAT

CollegeBoard is the organization that adminsters the SAT. Students create an account and access their account on the CollegeBoard SAT Suite. Students need to ensure they use a personal email to create their account and remember their username/password.

The SAT includes math through Geometry and Algebra II. The most advantageous time to take the SAT is toward the end of the school year that students take Algebra II in. Click here to learn more about subjects tested on the SAT. Students have access to free SAT preparation through Khan Academy.

Students eligilble for free testing waivers can request SAT testing waivers through their CollegeBoard account. They will need the name of their School Counselor and email.
